Moses Cone Memorial Park Guide

Explore History and Nature at Moses Cone Memorial Park Guide

Welcome to Moses Cone Memorial Park, a stunning 3,500-acre estate on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, North Carolina. This park offers a unique blend of natural beauty and historical significance, making it a must-visit destination for outdoor enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Explore scenic trails, picturesque lakes, and the grand Flat Top Manor, all while immersing yourself in the rich history of the Cone family. The park's history is deeply intertwined with that of Moses Cone, a successful textile entrepreneur and conservationist. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Cone purchased the land and transformed it into a model estate. He implemented sustainable farming practices, planted extensive apple orchards, and created a network of carriage roads for enjoying the landscape. Flat Top Manor, the centerpiece of the estate, was completed in 1901 and served as the Cone family's summer home. After Moses Cone's death in 1908, his wife, Bertha, continued to manage the estate until her death in 1947, at which point it was bequeathed to the National Park Service. Visitors to Moses Cone Memorial Park can enjoy a variety of activities. Hike or horseback ride along the 25 miles of carriage roads, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Fish or canoe on Bass Lake or Price Lake. Tour Flat Top Manor, now home to the Parkway Craft Center, showcasing the work of local artisans. During the fall, the park is particularly stunning with vibrant foliage displays. While there isn't a specific culinary tradition associated with the park itself, the nearby town of Blowing Rock offers a variety of dining options featuring Appalachian cuisine.
